CBS College Sports gives us quotage from last night's Tony Barnhart Show.

NEWS AND NOTES FROM “THE TONY BARNHART SHOW” ON CBS COLLEGE SPORTS NETWORK

Guests Include Archie Manning, University of Miami head coach Randy Shannon, Actor David Keith and SI.com’s Stewart Mandel

Barnhart Examines Inconsistencies and Controversies of Major Polls

THE TONY BARNHART SHOW, a new weekly one-hour primetime college football talk show airs Tuesday’s at 9:00 PM, ET on CBS COLLEGE SPORTS NETWORK. “Mr. College Football,” Tony Barnhart hosts the show along with analyst Brian Jones. The hard-hitting program debates and analyzes the hot topics and issues facing college football both on and off-the-field.

Tuesday’s episode included interviews with former Ole Miss quarterback Archie Manning, University of Miami head coach Randy Shannon, Actor David Keith and SI.com senior reporter Stewart Mandel.

Throughout the season Barnhart will invite a variety of high-profile guests from the college football community, including coaches, administrators, writers, broadcasters and former players to the program. The distinguished guests will offer in-depth lively, opinionated, topical discussions on the world of college football.

Mike Aresco serves as Executive Producer. Tyler Hale and Stefan Van Engen produce.

(On the Coaches Poll)

Barnhart: Nobody respects coaches more than I do. But guys when it comes to your coaches poll, the USA Today Coaches Poll, and the roll it plays in determining the National Champion, fellas you’ve got a problem, a big problem...At a time when there should be more accountability from the coaches, the American Football Coaches Association has decided that beginning with the 2010 regular season, none of the coaches polls, not even the last one which determines the BCS match-up will be made public. Seriously?...Bottom line, unless the coaches are willing to make their ballots public on a weekly basis, they need to get out of the BCS business. The stakes are just too high and the public, which invests billions of dollars into college football deserve transparency in the process.

Stewart Mandel: I’ve noticed that early this season the AP voters have been moving teams up and down much more dramatically based on what actually happens on the field. If I had to guess, that because like you said earlier it’s not generally them that are doing the voting, they have an SID helping them out or a football operations guy, and their not as likely to rock the boat. And as a result, you end up with Florida State way behind BYU even though they just crushed them on the field.

Brian Jones: It all goes back to the timing issues. They don’t have time. They have 20 hours a week, unless you’re Michigan allegedly, to coach their team up. They don’t have time to look at all these games…Unless you’re watching all these football games, how can you honestly get a true evaluation of the other teams?

Actor David Keith

(On Tennessee Coach Lane Kiffin)

I love exactly what he’s doing. The Florida game was watched by about 60 percent more people than watched it last year. That’s because of Lane Kiffin. He got to Urban Meyer. You could see it in Urban Meyer’s face at the handshake. No matter what happened in the game, he got to him…It’s really worked, I love it when the feathers get ruffled…We love the excitement here. I miss Phillip Fulmer like I miss a relative. I love the man. He is one of the greatest people I’ve ever known. But there is an excitement in the air that simply newness will bring. And so far, people are pretty proud of what’s going on.

Archie Manning

(On how the SEC has changed)

The kids are so fast and so physical. The pro game has changed a lot and it kind of filters down. A lot of the concepts come down from the pros, and it’s more complex. But it can’t be as complex as the pros because the college coaches aren’t allowed to spend as much time, and that’s a good thing…But there are a lot of great athletes running around out there, and doing a lot of blitzing. These kids have great access to facilities in the offseason, speed coaches and weightlifting. These kids are big, strong and fast. College football is a violent game, especially in the Southeastern Conference.

(On Cincinnati and Coach Brian Kelly)

Barnhart: Brian Kelly all of a sudden is looking a guy who is going to get the next big job. Cincinnati had to replace 10 starters on defense. They look like they can win the Big East again.

Taylor: He is a phenomenal coach. He gets his guys ready to play. He gets the right types of guys on the campus. Cincinnati is the only hope for the Big East right now. That University needs to step up and give him a reason to stick around or he might be gone.

While it is bittersweet to leave four years in Philly behind, I couldn't be more thrilled to come home to the Boston area for this opportunity."

McCarthy began her career as a reporter at WGGB in Springfield, Massachusetts. She then moved to WAFF the NBC affiliate in Huntsville, Alabama to serve as a weekend morning show anchor and reporter before moving on to Philadelphia in 2005.
