FOX SPORTS NOTES, QUOTES & ANECDOTES

Lynch: Crabtree Will Have To Earn Respect of Singletary & Teammates

Reporter Pam Oliver Visits Cowboys & Finds Out Their Plan to Get Back on Track on FOX NFL SUNDAY

ENIGMATIC COWBOYS LOOK TO GET BACK ON TRACK IN KC – The 2009 NFL on FOX campaign rolls into Week 5 on Sunday, Oct. 11 with singleheader coverage of five exciting matchups—each presented in crystal clear HD. Following another inconsistent performance last week in Denver, Tony Romo and the up-and-down Cowboys face another AFC West opponent in the Chiefs at 1:00 PM ET. Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Pam Oliver call all the action live from Arrowhead Stadium. Then, Brett Favre & Adrian Peterson lead the 4-0 Vikings on the road as they take on Steven Jackson and the Rams. In Philadelphia, the Eagles welcome Donovan McNabb’s return to the lineup against the Buccaneers. To round out the 1:00 PM ET action, the Redskins head to Carolina to play the Panthers. At 4:00, Matt Ryan and the Falcons are in San Francisco to battle the 49ers and Mike Singletary’s vastly improving defense.

Coverage begins at 12:00 PM ET with America’s most-watched pregame show, FOX NFL SUNDAY. Terry Bradshaw and Curt Menefee co-host the Emmy Award-winning program and are joined by analysts Howie Long, Michael Strahan and Jimmy Johnson. The crew is joined by NFL Insider Jay Glazer who presents the latest league news and scoops in the FOX NFL SUNDAY studio and comedic prognosticator Frank Caliendo contributes his weekly “Frank’s Picks” segment. LYNCH: CRABTREE’S SPEED AND EXPLOSIVENESS WILL HELP THE 49ERS – FOX Sports analyst John Lynch is impressed with the NFC West leading 49ers and is pleased WR Michael Crabtree has finally come to his senses. Michael Crabtree will help the 49ers however, after being around Mike Singletary last week he will have to earn his way onto the field. I'm glad that Crabtree has come to his senses and gotten himself closer to being on the field. Whether it was bad advice or just a bad decision on his part, he has already cost himself dearly. Crabtree is explosive and when Frank Gore gets healthy, defenses will certainly be stacking the box against him and I think Shaun Hill may be the most underrated football player in the NFL.”

BILLICK ON MARK SANCHEZ’S WEEK 4 STRUGGLES – FOX Sports analyst and former NFL head coach Brian BillickMark Sanchez’s hardships this past Sunday. “He better learn from his mistakes because he’ll see it again. After being in awe following his first three games, last Sunday was the first time we saw Sanchez struggle. He made mistakes rookies make and he’ll see that defensive attack again because this is a copy cat league. As a coach, we’ll see it on film, steal it and take credit for it. Sanchez should expect to see some of those trap-looks that Gregg Williams threw at him down in New Orleans assessed NY Jets QB from other teams.”

PHIL SIMMS

(On New England-Denver Matchup): The big thing in the game when you watch the Patriots play is that New England gets on the field, and they stay on the field a long time with their offense. That really hurt all their opponents and even the Jets, who beat them. They tire your defense out and now your offense is always on the sideline as you’re watching Tom Brady complete another 3rd and 4 or 3rd and 5. I think New England sees the type of defense Denver’s running. They’ve seen it over the years with Baltimore, and some with the Jets with Eric Mangini. So they’ll be a little more prepared to play it than some of the other teams have to this point. I’m really interested to see how the New England Patriots react to Denver’s defense.

(On Denver’s Defense): Everybody’s asking all the time how has Denver’s defense changed so much? Well it’s changed so much because they’ve changed. They got a lot of new personnel. You know, they brought in Brian Dawkins; they brought in people like Darrell Reid who other guys don’t know about. They got draft picks and the scheme has changed. So there’s nothing they’re doing that resembles anything they tried to do last year and of course the results have been fantastic. So when it doesn’t work you do two things: get a different coach and get new personnel. Denver did both.

(On Brett Favre and his Performance Versus Green Bay on Monday Night): I noticed a few things in the game with him. First, the most glaring thing about him is that with the Vikings offense there’s nothing they do that he hasn’t done a thousand times. So his comfort level of calling plays and knowing where everybody is going to be on the field is extraordinary. No quarterback in history has been under the same system as many years as he has. Nobody in history! So that helps. Also, you can tell after four games, there’s a tremendous difference in week 4 than there was in week 1. Physically, his arm is live but also the biggest thing I’ve noticed is his legs. His feet look better, he looks more sound, and he’s just getting in game shape. He’s just getting in shape period. I don’t think he was in great shape when he went to training camp, but him getting in shape—we’re seeing that in his play. And quite honestly, if he played until he’s 45, he’ll still have the same arm that we see. So that arm is arguably—well I don’t know if it’s arguably anymore—the greatest arm the NFL’s ever seen.

TRIP IN THE WAY BACK MACHINE…

In commemoration of THE NFL ON CBS celebrating its 50th year broadcasting the NFL, footage from historic highlights will be featured during each game. Included among the clips this week during the Oakland Raiders-New York Giants game is Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor’s game winning interception and touchdown return on November 25, 1982.

To NBC Sports and the hype for this Sunday night's game between Indianapolis and the hapless Tennessee Tuxedos ... errrrrr..... Titans.
PEYTON MANNING LEADS THE UNDEFEATED COLTS AGAINST THE TITANS ON "SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL"

"He's making the game look too easy." - Collinsworth on Manning

"Nobody is playing quarterback better than Peyton Manning."
-- Michaels

NEW YORK -- Oct. 6, 2009 -- Peyton Manning, who will move into sole possession of third place for career touchdown passes with his next TD pass, and can become just the third QB in NFL history to start a season with five 300-yard games, leads the undefeated Indianapolis Colts into Nashville to take on the Tennessee Titans in what has become a heated AFC South rivalry on "NBC Sunday Night Football."

Manning can take over sole possession of third place for career touchdown passes by throwing for a score. He is currently tied for third with Fran Tarkenton (342) and trails only Brett Favre (472) and Dan Marino (420) on the all-time list.

Coverage begins with "Football Night in America," Sunday at 7 p.m. ET with Bob Costas hosting live from inside the stadium. Al Michaels (play-by-play), Cris Collinsworth (analyst) and Andrea Kremer (sideline reporter) call the action from LP Field in Nashville, Tenn.

Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann will co-host "Football Night" from NBC's 30 Rockefeller Plaza studios joined by Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy, two-time Super Bowl winner Rodney Harrison and Sports Illustrated's Peter King. "Football Night's" Tiki Barber will report from the Patriots-Broncos game in Denver.

MICHAELS ON MANNING AND THE COLTS: "Right now I don't think anyone is looking better than the Colts and nobody is playing quarterback better than Peyton Manning."

COLLINSWORTH ON MANNING AND THE COLTS: "He's making the game look too easy. It's a show to watch him play the quarterback position, and, defensively the Colts are not that bad either with (Dwight) Freeney and (Robert) Mathis playing the way they are."

HARRISON ON MANNING: "He's very consistent. He trusts his wide receivers AND he has a running game."

DUNGY ON THE COLTS OFFENSE: "The offense has been sharp right from training camp. They have a lot of weapons and Peyton is using them all."

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS GAME TO THE TITANS:
MICHAELS: "Coaches don't want to say that this is a 'must win' because there is always a game the following week but THIS is a 'must win' for the Titans."

DUNGY: "It's a must win situation for the Titans. They have to win this game to have any chance at the playoffs."

HARRISON ON THE MATCHUP: "The Titans have struggled in the secondary and now they have to face Peyton Manning and Dallas Clark -- who is one of the best tight ends in the league -- and all those weapons. It's impossible to stop these guys, they're just so talented."

COLTS VS. TITANS: The Colts have won nine of the last 12 matchups, although the teams split the 2008 series and the Titans won last year's game at LP Field, 31-21. The Colts are 4-0 for the fifth time since 2000. No other team has accomplished the feat more than twice during that time. After posting the league's best record in 2008 at 13-3, the Titans are still searching for their first win of the season.

COLTS-TITANS IN PRIMETIME: This is the second primetime appearance on NBC Sports this season for both the Colts and Titans. The Colts defeated the Cardinals on the road, 31-10, in Week 3 while the Titans lost the season's opening night game to the Steelers, 13-10 in overtime, on the special Thursday night NFL kickoff game. The Colts are scheduled to appear on SNF one more time in 2009, hosting the Patriots in Week 10.

The Colts are now 8-3 overall since the NFL's premier primetime package moved to NBC Sports in 2006 and their 12 SNF appearances are the most for any team. The Titans are 1-1 on NBC Sports in primetime having defeated the Colts 16-10 in Week 17 in 2007 and losing to the Steelers earlier this season.

SUNDAY NIGHT IS 300-YARD NIGHT: Winning quarterbacks have passed for 300-or-more yards in each of the last three 'Sunday Night Football' games this season. Peyton Manning, who accomplished the feat in Week 3, has a chance to continue the SNF streak and his own 300-yard passing streak this Sunday night.

Manning has thrown for 300-or-more yards in each of his first four games this season and can become just the third player in NFL history to begin a season with five such games, joining Kurt Warner (2000) and Steve Young (1998), who each accomplished the feat in their first six games.

Additionally, in the Week 3 Colts-Cardinals game, both Manning and Kurt Warner eclipsed the 300-yard mark. Following are the QBs who passed for more than 300 yards this season on SNF:

Week 2 Eli Manning, Giants, 330 yards vs. Cowboys -- W 33-31
Week 3 Peyton Manning, Colts, 379 yards vs. Cardinals -- W 31-10
Week 3 Kurt Warner, Cardinals, 332 yards vs. Colts -- L 31-10
Week 4 Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers, 333 vs. Chargers -- W 38-28

"SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL" IS 4 FOR 4: After winning 9 of 16 Sunday night's in 2006, 11 of 16 in 2007 and 13 of 16 in 2008, "Sunday Night Football" is a perfect 4 for 4 this season. SNF has been the No. 1 program across all of primetime television for four straight Sundays.

The "Sunday Night Football" season-to-date average of 20.8 million viewers is the best start to a season in SNF history.

"SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL" VIEWERSHIP THROUGH WEEK 4:
2009: 20.8 million
2008: 17.8 million
2007: 17.1 million
2006: 18.6 million

"SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL EXTRA": For the second straight season, the 17-game Sunday Night Football schedule will be available to fans on NBC Sports as well as streamed live on NBCSports.com and NFL.com.

The live coverage on NBCSports.com and NFL.com will once again come from NBC Sports' broadcast of Sunday Night Football plus four additional camera angles and several new interactive features. Sunday Night Football Extra will employ a full HD-quality player using Microsoft Silverlight and Smooth Streaming that will help set new benchmarks for live streaming video cross-platform. The video player, the highest quality yet, will include full DVR and functionality allowing the user to pause and scroll back-and-forth -- even review plays in "slo-mo" -- all while watching live video.

ROTOWORLD.COM'S WEEK 5 FANTASY SLEEPER PICKS: Rotoworld.com managing editor Gregg Rosenthal, who was named Fantasy Football Writer of the Year by the Fantasy Sports Writers Association, picks his fantasy sleepers for Week 5.

1. Mark Sanchez, Jets QB vs. Dolphins: Miami is so good defending the run, the Jets rookie starter will try out his new toy Braylon Edwards plenty.
2. David Garrard, Jaguars QB vs. Seahawks: Quietly, Garrard is playing excellent football. Seattle's secondary is not.
3. Jerome Harrison, Browns RB vs. Bills: It doesn't matter if Jamal Lewis returns; Harrison is the best running back on the team.
4. LeSean McCoy, Eagles RB vs. Bucs: Now splitting the workload with Brian Westbrook, McCoy could get a lot of carries in this likely rout.
5. Mohammad Massaquoi, Browns WR vs. Bills: With Edwards gone, this talented rookie deep threat will get most of Derek Anderson's attention.
Thanks to the ESPN PR staff for putting together the features you'll see on the network's NFL studio shows over the weekend through Monday.

NFL Network will an interview on Sunday between the Playmaker, Michael Irvin and formerly disgruntled Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

Broncos WR Brandon Marshall 1-on-1 with NFL Network’s Michael Irvin

Broncos WR Brandon Marshall sat down for a 1-on-1 interview with NFL Network’s Michael Irvin to discuss his relationship with head coach Josh McDaniels and the Broncos organization.

Irvin’s sit down with Marshall will air in its entirety this Sunday on NFL GameDay Morning at 9:00 AM ET on NFL Network.

Below are a few quotes from the interview:

“From the beginning, I knew I was going down the wrong road. I had plenty of conversations with my agent, my mentor. He always said, ‘Hey Brandon, let’s calm down a bit.’ At the end of the day, I always told him, ‘Whatever you decide is what I’m going to do.’ But when he told me, ‘Okay, shut your mouth, go out there and practice,’ it was hard for me because I was so emotionally wrapped up in the whole situation.” – Marshall on his attitude during training camp

“There was a lot of build up from the offseason and things were going back and forth in camp. That day, it reached a boiling point for me and I let my emotions get the best of me, I really did. If I could take it back, I would. I would do things a lot differently.” – Marshall on his actions during a training camp practice

“The second game of the season at halftime everyone left (the locker room), getting ready to go back out there and I stayed and I sat in my locker, put my head down with a towel over my head. I thought I was the only one in there and I broke down (in tears). I heard a voice and it was Brian Dawkins. He tapped me four times on my back…he said ‘Come on baby.’ And once I heard that, it’s like my teammates are with me…I’m going to get through this. And I think everything is on track, we’re on track. It’s exciting to be a Bronco.” – Marshall on being benched vs. Oakland and how the experience motivated him
