Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 40 – Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News

Shuffling between two offices this week is killing me and it’s interrupting my blogging, but I do what I can. I did have time to record this week’s podcast with Keith Thibault of Sports Media Journal.

Our guest for the entire podcast this week is none other than Barry Horn, sports media columnist of the Dallas Morning News. To be honest, I’m surprised we didn’t have him on earlier, but that was rectified this week.

We talk about “The Decision” and how the whole thing came off for ESPN. While it garnered good ratings, Keith, Barry and I discuss how badly ESPN smelled after the whole thing was said and done. None of us liked the ethical questions regarding Jim Gray’s involvement and how the program lays the groundwork for other athletes to use ESPN to make similar announcements.

The World Cup was next on our plate and while we were all impressed with the ratings, neither Keith nor Barry felt that this was the start of a soccer revolution in the United States.

More ratings discussion and it went to the All-Star Game which had its lowest overnight rating ever.

We then talked about Barry covering the Dallas sports media scene which includes Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. I asked Barry about Fox Sports Southwest’s coverage of last week’s incident where a fan fell over the railing at the Ballpark at Arlington during the Cleveland-Texas Rangers game.

Then we finished with a comparison of the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner to Jones.

All in all, another very good podcast. Head on over to iTunes to subscribe to “Sports Media Journal” to ensure you receive every single edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast. I have them all and they’re great to listen to.

Of course, you can head over here to listen to the podcast in its entirety.
